Yetholm Village Shop
Community Buy-Out Project The village shop is one of our most valuable community assets, and we should now be thinking of how best to secure its continuing existence as a going concern. One way of doing so is through a community buy-out, and a group is now starting to form to see how this can be done. Roy and Barbara Maltby are aware of this initiative, and welcome it. The first stage is to establish some form of not-for-profit company or community enterprise vehicle, ideally with charitable status, to purchase the shop business and premises from Roy and Barbara, and then to operate the shop for the benefit of the community. In order to meet the requirements of the legislation, and to tap into potential sources of grant funding, we will have to be able to show that the project has a broad measure of support from the village and the surrounding area served by the shop. Please therefore would anyone who feels they might be interested in an active involvement in this first stage to get in touch (if they have not already done so) with Alastair Hirst, The Green, Kirk Yetholm – tel. 420214 or on [email protected] – over the next couple of weeks. We all can then meet towards the end of the month for an exchange of views, and a presentation of options and a road-map by one of the community empowerment professionals from The Bridge. We then should be in position to form a working group to drive things forward. Alastair Hirst 3 July 2019 |
